Remodeling on the Water

Overview
At Ohana Building Supply, we recently had the privilege of designing and remodeling the dream home of a local couple whose lives have revolved around the ocean. From their early days providing dive tours and waiting tables in Waikiki, their business, Living Ocean Tours, has grown into one of Oahu’s most established names in marine tourism. After two decades of hard work and success, it was finally time for them to create the home they’d always envisioned, and they turned to us for help.

Existing Home
The couple’s 1970s-built home in Hawaii Kai was spacious but outdated, featuring dark-stained kitchen cabinets, carpeted floors, and a popcorn ceiling. However, the open floor plan and abundance of natural light from marina-facing windows offered great potential. We began by refinishing the ceiling, removing the popcorn texture, and painting the vaulted wood ceiling white to enhance the height of the living room. The old carpet was replaced with warm luxury vinyl plank flooring to bring a cozy, modern feel to the space.

Timeless Materials
The centerpiece of the remodel is the kitchen, featuring a large 8-foot island with waterfall edges on both sides. The 42” deep engineered stone slab provides ample space for both food prep and seating. The cabinetry chosen, our Frameless White Shaker, offers a sleek, modern style with timeless shaker doors and a satin white finish. Constructed with ¾” frameless plywood boxes, soft-close hardware, and metal drawer sides, these cabinets deliver exceptional quality, durability, and value.

Thoughtful Details
To reflect their connection to the ocean, we incorporated unique design elements throughout. Large whale-shaped light fixtures hang above the main living space, while a clamshell-shaped vessel sink sits atop a marble vanity. The first-floor shower, with direct access to the marina, was updated with groutless engineered stone shower panels for a sleek, easy-to-maintain design.
